EU at the “end of the line”

Date: Wednesday 9th January 2019

The tradition of respecting the nation state received a boost as the EU ambassador to the US was left to wait till last at an official event.

President Obama had previously elevated the delegation and ambassador from the EU to the same as a nation state.

President Trump, however, has reverted to the old system of treating international organisations lower.

At the state funeral for the late President George HW Bush, on 5 December, the EU’s ambassador, Daniel O’Sullivan, had to wait till the very end to be called up.

He was not invited to certain events at all.

US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo asked “Brexit – if nothing else – was a political wake-up call. Is the EU ensuring that the interests of countries and their citizens are placed before those of bureaucrats here in Brussels?”

Bill Etheridge, West Midlands Libertarian MEP said “It is great to see a return to prioritising the nation state.

“The fact that the EU are objecting to this system illustrates once more the way they view themselves a federal super-state.

“It’s a kind of poetic justice for them to find themselves “at the end of the line””
